News:

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Trinity and to the third grade classroom. During the first couple of weeks I start with group/individual evaluations in reading, spelling, writing, and math. What a great week we have had getting to know each other. I am really excited about this class as a whole. They are a group of hard workers that work well together.

The theme for Trinity’s 2006-2007 school year is RESPECT, an acronym for Respecting Every Single Person Exactly as Christ Teaches. Right now we are working on a language arts project creating a unique friend. They will be introducing their new friend to the class through writing. Teaching others to respect differences as special and unique.

In science we start the year with a leaf unit. We have talked about the different characteristics of leaves and sorted them according to their unique characteristics. As part of the unit we take a field trip to my sister’s land located on Fisk Ave. just past the Outlet Mall.  We will spend the day gathering and identifying leaves. We also enjoy a hayride, and have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon we will be gathering seeds, which will lead us into the next unit in science on life cycles. I do need parent volunteers to drive. Parents are invited to spend the day enjoying the hayride, picnic and the gathering. Let me know on the attached permission slip if you are able to come along with us that day. Also remind your children to dress for the weather. It might be a little chilly and muddy so they should bring a jacket and some old tennis shoes or boots.

Just a quick overview of our week:

Reading – reader’s theatre / evaluations
Spelling – developing individual spelling lists
Writing – unique friends
Math – review of working with numbers and calendars and measuring
Religion – creation
Science – leaf unit
Social Studies – maps skills unit

The students have started using an assignment notebook this year. They are responsible to bring this back and forth to school each day. Help them to develop a good habit at home of double checking to see that their homework is completely finished each night. This is also a good spot for us to communicate back and forth about assignments or questions you might have. I will check the notebooks each morning.

We are off to a great start. I am excited about working with your children this year.

In His Service,

Sue Dillman
